Did You Know . . .

Through our Mission Giving Cedar Grove Presbyterian Church is a Partner Congregation Supporting the Ministry of the Samaritan Counseling Center of Lancaster.

As part of the covenant between Samaritan Counseling Center and Cedar Grove vouchers are available from the pastor to be used for one counseling session at no charge by a church member.

Did You Know . . .

Cedar Grove Presbyterian Church has both a Helping Members in Need Fund and a Pastor’s Discretionary Fund? Both of these funds are supported by the generous contributions of church members.

Helping Members in Need provides emergency assistance for members of the congregation to help with unexpected medical bills, prescriptions, or housing assistance after a fire or job loss.

The Pastor’s Discretionary Fund provides assistance for members of the community at large or travelers in need of food or fuel, specifically through vouchers to be used at Martin’s Trailside.

You may make a designated gift to either or both of these funds as an extra gift on Sunday, or by sending your gift directly to the church office. Please note the fund you are designating your gift for.

Another extension of the Mission and Ministry of Cedar Grove Presbyterian Church.

Among many ongoing mission projects at Cedar Grove is our monthly collection for the Lancaster County Council of Churches Food Bank. The first Sunday of the Month is "Food Sunday" at Cedar Grove, and all are invited to bring non-perishable food items to deposit in the shopping cart in the vestibule.WE have gathered over 100 pounds in the past three months.

On the Presbytery level, the Umtata Partnership Taskforce of Presbytery is planning a fall mission work trip to South Africa. The goal will be to help rebuild Melekayah Matya’s congregation’s new church building. It was destroyed two years ago during a monsoon while in the process of being built. Funds will be raised to assist the rebuilding efforts.

While many of our loved ones are deployed overseas and here at home, Cedar Grove salutes those who are serving now and those who have given so much to preserve our freedom.

WHAT IS A VET?

Some veterans bear visible signs of their service: a missing limb, a jagged scar, a certain look in the eye. Others may carry the evidence inside them: a pin holding a bone together, a piece of shrapnel in the leg -or perhaps another sort of inner steel: the soul’s ally forged in the refinery of adversity. Except in parades, however, the men and women who have kept America safe wear no badge or emblem. You can’t tell a vet just by looking.

What is a vet?

He is the cop on the beat who spent six months in Saudi Arabia sweating two gallons a day making sure the armored personnel carriers didn’t run out of fuel.

He is the bar room loudmouth, dumber than five wooden planks, whose overgrown frat-boy behavior is outweighed a hundred times in the cosmic scales by four hours of exquisite bravery near the 38th parallel.

She or He is the nurse who fought against futility and went to sleep sobbing every night for two solid years in Da Nang.

He is the POW who went away one person and came back another -or didn’t come back AT ALL.

He is the Quantico drill instructor who has never seen combat -but has saved countless lives by turning slouchy, no-account rednecks and gang members into Marines, and teaching them to watch each other’s backs.

He is the parade riding Legionnaire who pins on his ribbons and medals with a prosthetic hand.

He is the career quartermaster who watches the ribbons and medals pass him by.

He is the three anonymous heroes in the Tomb of the Unknowns, whose presence at the Arlington National Cemetery must forever preserve the memory of all of the anonymous heroes whose valor died unrecognized with them on the battlefield or in the ocean’s sunless deep.

He is the old guy bagging groceries at the supermarket -palsied now and aggravatingly slow -who helped liberate a Nazi death camp and who wishes all day long that his wife were still alive to hold him when the nightmares come.

He is an ordinary and yet an extraordinary human being - a person who offered some of his life’s most vital years in the service of his country, and who sacrificed his ambitions so others would not have to sacrifice theirs.

He is a soldier and a savior and a sword against the darkness, and he is nothing more than the finest, greatest testimony on behalf of the finest, greatest nation ever known.

So remember, each time you see someone who has served our country, just lean over and say "Thank You." That’s all most people need, and in most cases it will mean more than medals they could have been awarded or were awarded.

Vacation Bible School 2006

Take a journey with us!

Vacation Bible School at Cedar Grove Church will be held from Sunday, July 23, 2006 to Thursday, July 27, 2006 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. The theme is Trading Places. Students will explore the world and have exciting adventures as they trade places with people in a number of different countries over a five-day period. Classes will be available for all ages—including adults. Leaders
and Helpers are always needed.

Old Friend

I finally bought a boat today,
is she worthy, Lord I pray
When water underneath her lies,
and darkness in the clouds arise

A small boat built for two or three
an aged man sold her to me
He told me stories of fishing with friends
and long summer days that seemed without end

His voice trembled some,
and his eyes smiled old
When we loaded his friend,
his handshake was bold

It was then that I knew
it was more than a boat,
But a good friend, a buddy,
and music unwrote

I looked in the mirror as I drove away,
and I wondered what memories

Our Mission

    The mission of the Cedar Grove Presbyterian Church is to glorify God through our service to His son, Jesus Christ and His church at Cedar Grove. We strive to live each day as witnesses to His love and mercy so that in our homes, our community and our workplaces, God’’s love through us brings joy, honest labor, strengthened faith and inner peace to us and those lives we touch.
    We strive to study to learn more of Christ’’s mission for the church close to home, throughout our nation, and in the far corners of the world. In learning more of Christ’s mission, we attempt to provide resources of every kind. By our hands,our prayers, our money, and any other gift we may have received from God, we attempt to minister to those without faith or hope — those with no food or shelter; the aged, the lonely, the sick, the maimed, the sick of heart and weak of faith.
    Through our Christian Education program, we seek to create a community

of disciples. Our primary goal is to encounter the truth of God through the teachings of the Bible. By our love and our deeds we want to demonstrate the faith and love we have received from God. Our mission is to further reflect that faith and love every day.

As summer ends, we turn toward the beginning of Sunday school with the reminder that you are never too old to stop learning and growing closer to God. We invite you to join us as we offer a variety of classes for young and old alike. The class on Revelations that began over the summer will continue. Also, the Prayer Meetings that are held on Wednesdays at 7 continue for all those in need of prayer. If you can’t join us, please call in your prayer requests to 717-354-5573.

Christian Education

Our church provides Biblically based study for both children and adults seeking to be closer to God.
Our facility accommodates both youth and adults in a variety of settings. Cedar Grove is known for having the longest, continuously active Sunday School (begun in 1820) in Lancaster County. Sunday School classes meet from September through May.

Right now, we are excitedly looking forward to the beginning of Vacation Bible School on July 23, 2006.

Both child and adult classes will be held.
