SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL POLICE K-9
The Southern Regional Police Department is currently raising funds for a K-9 Unit. The K-9 Unit will consist of a trained dog handler (Officer Carter) and a German Shepherd, which will be a "Dual-Purpose" K-9, trained in many aspects of law enforcement. The K-9 will be used for patrol, officer protection, suspect apprehension as well as drug, weapon and suspect detection. The cost to start a K-9 unit has been determined to be approximately $26,000 and an approximately $2,000 per year. The initial cost will cover the training, food, and living expenses for the K-9.
The K-9 Unit will be a vital part of the police department for the above listed uses, as well as community events and appearances, while also being a resource for surrounding departments. The Southern Regional Police Departments jurisdiction covers 28 square miles, which includes residential neighborhoods, farmland, businesses and densely wooded river hills. The addition of a K-9 unit will greatly improve officer safety by giving the department another resource as they often respond to calls for service alone in areas where back-up is miles away and radio coverage is unavailable at times.
The department is seeking donations for the K-9 Unit from businesses, organizations and residents therefore preventing a tax strain to be placed on those who are unable to afford additional expenses at this time. The department has received much support from the community for the effort, yet we are still nowhere near our target amount to start and sustain a K-9 Unit.
